About This Training

This 6-hour clinical training examines codependency and overfunctioning as relational and behavioral patterns that may involve excessive responsibility, rescuing, monitoring, managing, accommodation, boundary difficulty, and difficulty receiving support. Participants will learn to distinguish these patterns from diagnosis, healthy caregiving, and appropriate relational investment; assess their possible functions, strengths, costs, and context; develop individualized case formulations; and identify interventions that support boundaries, reciprocity, autonomy, and greater relational flexibility.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

Differentiate codependency and overfunctioning from diagnosis, healthy caregiving, and appropriate relational investment.

Identify common codependent and overfunctioning relational patterns and assess their possible functions, strengths, and costs.

Apply a contextual framework to assess responsibility, boundaries, relational roles, and maintaining factors in case conceptualization.

Select intervention strategies that reduce rigid over-responsibility and support boundaries, reciprocity, autonomy, and relational flexibility.

This intermediate-level course is designed for social workers and other behavioral health professionals, including professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and other licensed or pre-licensed behavioral health clinicians whose practice includes assessment, case conceptualization, and intervention related to relational patterns, boundaries, over-responsibility, and interpersonal functioning.

Her clinical and educational work includes trauma-informed practice, relational functioning, boundaries, over-responsibility, perfectionism, emotional patterns, and high-functioning adaptations.
